FTW.23: Reading to your children

Fatherhood in a Technological World – Message #23

Back to Basics

In the video, I go over some ideas how to use reading as part of your daily routine to connect and teach your children of various ages.

Especially in today high-tech environment, people’s creativity and imagination can suffer as a result of seeing everything through internet images, focused marketing, texts, tweets and articles only long enough to accomodate someone with an attention deficit. Quite frankly, It can all become pretty ridiculous.

So reading to your children and encouraging them to read a regular dose of chapter books without loads of illustrations will help children stir and develop their imaginations. It can also provide them a foundation for their own sense of writing style.

In the video, I mention how reading should be done on a daily basis, but what if it is not possible or somehow not appropriate? On one hand, as a child gets older, you can still use books as a centerpiece for discussion. On the other hand, for example, serving in the military, where a father (or mother) is necessarily separated for long periods from his family, using a book for a meaningful discussion may be an idea for fathers to connect with their children long distance.

When possible, I also suggest using real books and not something electronic. I think it’s great to scribble notes and highlight noteworthy passages (unless you check out from the library) and holding a real book in your hands lends itself for a more personalized and intimate experience.
