23.47 Smorgasbord Theology

Accusing others of moral degeneracy, it seems common place in today’s social media age. Everyone tags themselves as some level of righteousness greater than another and the underlying seething hatred roasts another generation.

Moral, moral, moral, all of a sudden everyone wants to be like Moses coming down from Mount Sinai.

Social media is a horn for anyone to toot and as much as much as we hate to admit it, we see some semblance of ourselves from those who have no qualms in letting their feelings and opinions all hang out. It’s a badge of some superiority complex that keeps our self-righteous attitudes protected by some safety in numbers.

If everyone is clamoring about being morally sound, or that their brand of morality it more sound than others, is there a real standard of morality? Is there a gold standard? If there is, how do we all stack up against such a lightning bolt? That’s right, all of those who are exposing some moral leg up on someone else are riding the trolley to hell itself.

Morality, if truth has anything to do with it, cannot exist if there are multiple standards. Moral relativity exists if every society is free to make up their own rules, so who can say who is right or wrong?

From the Biblical perspective, we are all made in the image of God, and one of God’s traits is being a judge, the one trait that many mainstream Western church congregations don’t take to heart (The God of the Judgment) and some other religions take to an extreme (instilling inter faith hatred). In either case, each of us has a propensity to judge whether we think so or not.

Being prejudice and coming to judgments is part of the human instinct to survive. The problem is, we do not, naturally, relinquish our perceive autonomy even if it is to God the Almighty.

However, all of us have a propensity to create our own god as easily as it is to be prejudice. It is that ingrained into us. Most of us have created our own god, the kind of god who tells you it is okay to have adulterous thoughts, to lie, to cheat, to think you are somehow better than the people who you hate, and to think that God does not exist because you’ve created your own god that suits your purposes.

The smorgasbord theology leads to the god of the Smorgasbord

If you do not believe in the God based on the Bible, you believe in a god of your own creation or that of other men. Even if you call yourself a Christian, or somehow think that just because you are associated with a church congregation, or, someone who is well know or speaks well, you are not a born again Christian and you have rejected Jesus Christ, you are a self-righteous idolater.

Here’s somethings more uncomfortable. Not only are you are likely a self-righteous idolater, but you are so hated by God that He is willing to make you part of the purge of the unrighteous.

25 “And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; 26 men’s hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27 Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. – Luke 21: 25-27

Why do I have to share a passage of Jesus’ teachings about His Second Coming? Such unimaginable realities that “men’s hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth…

Because the fear (reverence to God) that you invest in your spiritual life now, and not later when there is no recourse or when doing that time when “men’s hearts fail”, will pay an enormous return now. It is not how much trust you can place in a god that you have created, that’s a deception of your own self-righteousness, your self-protecting ego that keep you from really considering the truth of Jesus Christ. The simple act of faith required to secure eternal life and glory.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;
A good understanding have all those who do His commandments.
His praise endures forever.
– Proverbs 111:10

Where do we find ourselves if we reject such a magnificent gift as the forgiveness of any sin you have ever committed or will ever commit? How do you compare accepting God’ outstretched hand to a neglect that embraces false confidence, stubborn arrogant confidence in self-righteousness supported by the god of the Smorgasbord.

19 For in those days there will be tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the creation which God created until this time, nor ever shall be. 20 And unless the Lord had shortened those days, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake, whom He chose, He shortened the days. – Mark 13:19-20

21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’ – Matthew 7:21-23

And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. – Matthew 10:28

32 “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. 33 But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven. – Matthew 10:32-33

Their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it strikes a man. In those days men will seek death and will not find it; they will desire to die, and death will flee from them. – Revelation 9: 5b-6

You may ask, how can you be sure that my god is wrong and the God of the Bible is the one true God?

Something God wants to to know

It’s not about being morally superior, it’s about being obedient to God, obedient to the One True God who understands you can not take your filthy rags to redeem yourself. Because His grace, kindness and love for you is so great that he offered His only begotten Son as a perfect sacrifice when only a perfect sacrifice could help you be right with a righteous and holy God.

So, no, as a first order, when the moral compass is out of order, you don’t need to be morally upright. Just come as you are, because you are not and cannot achieve the standard of God’s righteousness by yourself or by an worldly construct which includes everything on the wide path to destruction (Matthew 7:13-14). Jesus was very clear: He is not here to save the righteous, but to save sinners from eternal hell (Mark 2:17, Luke 5:32, Matthew 7:18-23)

You only need to believe in the One whom He sent in order to receive eternal life and blessing.

From there you will be drawn to a life that the seed of repentance brings about.

“They shall be Mine,” says the Lord of hosts,
“On the day that I make them My jewels.
And I will spare them
As a man spares his own son who serves him.”
18 Then you shall again discern
Between the righteous and the wicked,
Between one who serves God
And one who does not serve Him.

– Malachi 3:17-18
