23.43 When Building New is better than Fixing the Old

If you’ve ever done some major remodeling or construction of a home before, you know that it’s a lot easier and cost effective to start from scratch when possible. I realize that there are many considerations in how someone adds on to a house but when you don’t have to spend the time to preserve an old structure and the painstaking effort it takes to match the old with the new, which often involves blending older finishing materials with new, old plumbing with new, old electrical with new, ventilation systems, compensation of sagging in the foundation and then bringing the old parts into the new code, well… you get the idea.

Professionally, I am an Integrated Circuit (IC Layout Engineer, known traditionally as “IC Mask Designer” or just “IC Layout Designer.” We use sophisticated state of the art CAD tools, take an Circuit Engineer’s (usually an Electrical Engineer who specializes in semiconductor device technology) schematics and convert them to the very precise artwork necessary to create the “masks” that form the images (shapes) needed to construct the many and semiconductor chips needed to support everything electronic modern world from AI processing to toaster ovens.

The same dynamic of changing applies to Layout Design. It’s generally easier, when possible, to create a new layout rather than make changes to a design that is already completed. Not only does a designer have to create a new layout, but it has to conform to the many often immovable existing features related to the existing layout. It’s possible to replace an old layout with one that is optimally designed for the new circuit, however, it is not usual to end up with a suboptimal, though acceptable, layout that falls within the margin of error. If not, greater effort is required to massage a layout or the schematics to deliver the desired improvement. The purpose of changing anything is to deliver in-spec performance or manufacturability.

Spiritual Changes

These truths in home construction and IC layout design extend from the spiritual immutability that spiritual renewal requires a complete conversion from the OLD to the NEW. The old is based on sinful and fallen self-nature which is tuned to temporary and worldly pleasures and the new is the transformed nature that is centered on Godly and eternal treasures.

19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 26:19-21

The spiritual change involves striving towards a newness that in its pure form rejects the old ways that are based on worldly objectives. In that sense, the old nature is neither capable of meeting the new building code nor can it meet the specs of the correct engineering design change.

45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls, 46 who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it. – Matthew 13:45-46

The idea of a person having “sold all he had” can be a frightening proposition since we often believe we are responsible to have achieved all that we have, we are resistant to letting it go if it means to serve God in that way. Yet as one seeks and grows to understand God, His glory, His blessings and His mercy, compared to the starkly transitory nature of much we used to place overweighted value to, one cannot help but be overwhelmed by the power, the beauty in the majesty of God – and comfort of the security one is blessed with knowing God who has defeated death for us.

Part of the new construction is giving worship, praise and honor to God, the source of all good things and we will come to be eternally grateful, in particular, for the Lord Jesus Christ, without whom we would not have a means of being reconciled with the Creator.
