FTW.24: Second Hand Television

Fatherhood in a Technological World – Message #24

You’ve heard about second-hand smoke from cigarettes, right? Well, this article is about avoiding the toxic effects of second hand television.

Blogger’s note: By the time I get to publishing a video, it’s usually several days after I actually make it. Veterans’ Day last week was an exception, I actually made that video the same day I published it. Because of the normal time lag, sitting down to write the text before publishing, I feel is a  little like sitting down for a pop essay quiz with a surprise subject in a family sociology or English class. I enjoy the challenge.

Second Hand Television – (Chinese Style).

There could be someone in your family tree who loves soap operas. If they live with you, my sincere sympathies to you. In the video I offer some practical suggestions, but in the text I will digress a bit here…

If the resident in question happens to like Chinese “soap operas” which commonly portray police or mafia story lines, there are bound to be scenes, more often than you would imagine, of multiple really angry people pointing guns at each other at close range while engaged in an emotional tirade. All part of some regurgitated crime story formula. If they are not pointing their handguns of choice at each other in some kind of ridiculous over-the-top stand off, there’s an alternate scene of some kind of domestic turmoil where family members are screaming at each other if not physically abusing each other. Terrible.

Meanwhile, the show’s theme song cycles through each episode ad nauseum and the music selection is usually so extremely mismatched it makes you feel queasy. For example, they might use the iconic segment of Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini mated to totally uninspired romantic acting and they would repeat that formula with the sensitivity of repeatedly hitting you over the head with a styrofoam brick.

Not to be too hard on Chinese soap operas, there have actually been some good ones, but I think you get my point.

Before we had children, I got a fair dose of Chinese soap operas, and the older docudramas  from mainland China tended to have greater attention to historical authenticity compared to Hong Kong or Taiwan productions, but, I am digressing here… really digressing.

The main point is, soap opera are not something I want my children to watch, yet TV can be a staple with some folks who live with you. In my video I suggest a practical move to protect your children from the effects of second-hand television.
