FTW.32 Tips for engineers to communicate with kids

Fatherhood in a Technological World – Message #32

As an engineer, you may be tempted to go into lengthy explanations, using too many words and complex concepts to teach basic concepts and mannerisms to your children.

It would be great if your child is predisposed to listen attentively and comprehending everything you say ( ha! ), but it is more likely they’d get more value and be able to better associate your lessons if you combined your effort with something they enjoy doing!

When it is not a waste of time to play games

This is a short video intro on how and why using games can help kids with character development or application of basic skills: Take the time to play an age appropriate game and be alert for simple lesson opportunities.

In every game you can figure out some kind of life skill to teach or you can research a variety of games to hand pick some that promotes a particular skill or characteristic you think it is important to train your child in.

Some ideas to consider for at home play:

  1. A simple deck of cards can be used to exercise communication and memory skills.
  2. Stay away from technology-based games.
  3. Create your own board game.
  4. Get a book related to family games and activities and plan ahead.

Yes, you may still get in the habit of lengthy verbal explanations, but playing games and other shared experiences will help your child correlate your ideas.

It’s a double win for your kids: they love to play games and they love to spend time with you. Make the time when they are young and when they are older may they have the same inclination to spend time with you when they have to break from their busy schedule.

Have fun and don’t forget your words of praise and encouragement when they do something right!
