Fatherhood in a Technological World – Message #56
In the video I go into my general philosophy about how to handle a child’s temper tantrum under a variety of normal life circumstances, including having their technology taken away for disciplinary reasons.
Please note: A child can use a wide variety of vocabulary to vent their frustration that is acceptable; however, there’s some language that is not tolerable if it is vulgar or clearly meant in disrespect.
Having said that, if their emotional response is directed towards you, it is important that as a parent you do not lose control of yourself and get caught up in the whirlwind of emotion in order to maintain your standing and leverage as a parent.
Under normal conditions you want to use empathetic responses to their feelings but maintain discipline with their behavior. It’s important that they be able to express strong emotions and that you as a parent appear to understand. Although it is important that you exhibit understanding do not let them tear up the house or become physically threatening, abusive or damaging.
I would say that it is okay for them to vent their feelings even if they wish harm to someone (it could be they are revealing their inner thoughts in confidence to you), their first reaction to something or someone could be a doozy, but it is not okay to let them dwell on the thought of violent or harmful actions. If they express the wish to do something or someone harm or ill will, you can, once again, point out that it’s normal to have such angry thoughts, maybe you even identify with their reaction, BUT, it’s not right for them to get on the wrong track by obsessing over wrong actions.

The effect on your children has and will have a great influence on their growth. As a parent, you may be feeling the anxiety of having to confront the challenges of being at the end of the rail of the powerful forces driving technology into the laps and hands of your children.
Your work is cut out for you are a father. Even though popular culture doesn’t do well to herald the value of the leadership role of men in the form of fathers, let me tell you right now, being a father in this time and age has never been more important.
