FTW.42: Are you over-instructing your kids?

Fatherhood in a Technological World – Message #42

I was listening to an interview with a family psychiatrist named Dr. Shimi Kang who wrote a book about how over-parenting creates children who lack initiative. If you are over-scheduling, over-protecting or over-instructing, you are inadvertently promoting a lack of initiative and self-direction in your children.

When I heard “over-instructing”, I knew I have a tendency to be guilty of that and how my children had problems waking up in the morning on school days was a good simple example of how  my over-instructing only caused them to wake up late and with greater difficulty.

In the video, I explain in detail how I corrected this problem by trying something new. It turns out my personal change of behavior resulted in immediate positive results for my children.

Gratitude, Helpfulness, Initiative, Self-Confidence

All of these character traits that I have touch on in recent blog articles have a thread that connects them all together and you role as a parent is critical in helping your children form them in an efficient way. How efficient and which way depends on you and your environment.

What you will find out is that parenting is a constant process of trial and error, and we are able to correct our parenting errors with feedback, both internal and external, positive and negative – the challenges continue to spiral as the children grow and your own circumstances change and evolve, but the basis for making the best decisions come from a foundation of love and commitment.

A Changing World

Speaking of changing environment, with the recent terrorist attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, and this week’s shutdown of the Los Angeles public schools due to some kind of threat of violence, I will move up the release of a video I made last week after my son’s school had a  security lock-down drill. In the upcoming video, I speak about how I as a parent used that event as a springboard to broaden the discussion with my children about world socio-political events.

The effect on your children has and will have a great influence on their growth. As a parent, you may be feeling the anxiety of having to confront the challenges of being at the end of the rail of the powerful forces driving technology into the laps and hands of your children.

Your work is cut out for you are a father. Even though popular culture doesn’t do well to herald the value of the leadership role of men in the form of fathers, let me tell you right now, being a father in this time and age has never been more important.
