FTW.41 Helping kids be helpful

Fatherhood in a Technological World – Message #41

I started this video series in the light of the growing influence technology has over the lives of most children. Part of the difficulty as a parent is found is helping children manage their use, but this is part of a larger effort to build their character and to broaden healthy experiences.

As I mentioned in earlier blogs, I typically do not create the video portion the same day as I publish an article, and yet I typically publish my videos in the order in which I film them. Sitting down each evening to see what I have to write about often comes as a bit of a surprise when I am reminded what I videos a couple weeks earlier, but fortunately, the series tends to have some continuity and today’s subject on “Helping Kids be Helpful” is a meaningful follow on to the recent articles on Gratitude. I think as parents we have no reservations about our children’s involvement with technology as long as they exhibit and maintain reasonably good character traits.

So in the short video I talk about how to nurture a child’s ability to be a good helper, another trait that can be so beneficial in your child’s life, and do it without some unintended roadblocks parents can dump onto their children’s mindset.

About Fatherhood in a Technological World

Fathers of young children in today’s modern society are facing unprecedented challenges with the wave of technology allowing ever easier access to the internet. The effect on your children has and will have a great influence on their growth. As a parent, you may be feeling the anxiety of having to confront the challenges of being at the end of the rail of the powerful forces driving technology into the laps and hands of your children.

Your work is cut out for you are a father. Even though popular culture doesn’t do well to herald the value of the leadership role of men in the form of fathers, let me tell you right now, being a father in this time and age has never been more important.
