FTW.30 Kids not following in your footsteps?

Fatherhood in a Technological World – Message #30

Some of you dad’s out there are wondering if your children are ever going to follow in your footsteps. Maybe you’re great at or really enjoy what you do but it appears like your child has no interest.

One thing is for certain, they are adjusting or adapting to who you are as a person, in conjunction with their environment.  Whether they are following in the footsteps you consciously want them to follow or the ones that you are exhibiting by conscious or unconscious attitudes and behaviors, both good and bad, you can be sure you are having a strong influence on your children.

Whether they adopt the same passion or not doesn’t matter as much as you helping them discover what they are good at and what turns them on. It could be in time that they do follow in your interests, either leisure or professional, but I’d like to remind you, they are better off making that decision on their own rather than you trying to force them to go a certain direction. Alternatively, they may take on one of your secondary interests in a surprise development.

That child may be your son or daughter, but they are also unique human being and growing up in a different time and place.

Establishing a good relationship with your child is the best position you can be in to help guide and encourage them through whichever route they choose, that way you learn to appreciate their possibilities and choices while sharing and confiding your wisdom as a parent rather than being a director.

In the video, I give an example of a famous musician whose father, a fine musician in his own right, never goaded his son to pursue music. Yet the influence was so strong, the son has become one of the greatest trumpeters of all time.

The effect on your children has and will have a great influence on their growth. As a parent, you may be feeling the anxiety of having to confront the challenges of being at the end of the rail of the powerful forces driving technology into the laps and hands of your children.

Your work is cut out for you are a father. Even though popular culture doesn’t do well to herald the value of the leadership role of men in the form of fathers, let me tell you right now, being a father in this time and age has never been more important.
