FTW.27: Do you agree as parents how to handle technology?

Fatherhood in a Technological World – Message #27

With the holidays coming up and the possibility of technology appearing as Christmas gifts, you and your spouse need to think about how to set limitations on how they should be using their new addiction.

I know, you don’t picture your child becoming a guinea pig, you imagine that he or she will become the next Einstein or Einstienette. With most children, hand-held technology can produce addictive-like behavior, just without the immediate chemical imbalances caused by various “recreational” substances.

With this bright and cheery warning, this sets the stage for you parents to set some serious ground rules you can agree on for your child to stick to. One of the biggest mistakes, I think, most parents can easily make is not anticipate how difficult it will be to manage your child’s expectations if you do do set clear limitations and required practices before using technology for play.

I might even treat it like driver’s ED or even a firearm safety course. Once you put that deadly machine in the hand’s of your child, they must be trained and ready for the power contained in that deceptively simple looking package.

BUT what if you and your spouse do not agree on how to handle your tike or older child who is perhaps already exposed to technology and exhibiting manipulative wild animal characteristics?

That’s what I touch on in my video message and so I wish you the best of luck on working in tandem despite your inherent differences of opinion.

About Fatherhood in a Technological World

Fathers of young children in today’s modern society are facing unprecedented challenges with the wave of technology allowing ever easier access to the internet. The effect on your children has and will have a great influence on their growth. As a parent, you may be feeling the anxiety of having to confront the challenges of being at the end of the rail of the powerful forces driving technology into the laps and hands of your children.

Your work is cut out for you are a father. Even though popular culture doesn’t do well to herald the value of the leadership role of men in the form of fathers, let me tell you right now, being a father in this time and age has never been more important.
