FTW: Veterans Day 2015

Fatherhood in a Technological World – Veterans’ Day 2015

My humble Thanks to all who have served and are serving in the military.

Although my message is directed at men and women in the US Military including those men who I serve with in the Navy’s submarine service, this message  can be applied for men and women in all militaries in all countries where the strength of the family, liberty and personal freedom and responsibility are valued and treasured.

In the video I encourage you to use your leadership, mentoring and motivational skills to help guide the younger generations. Having served in the military is not the end of the battle to help influence and secure the future of the country and way of life. Whether you help mentor one young person, hundreds or thousands, you can be sure to continue your service with pride.

All too often, we as veterans look back at our time in service as some of some of the best times in our lives, for one reason, it is due to the strength of our camaraderie, of going through extremely difficult experiences along with others, those people who know you in ways no one else ever will.

I believe it is important in our own ways to memorialize those times, but also, I should exhort, the sum of our lives is not our time in service while we wore the uniform. We were meant to take those experiences and other tough and important lessons which we have earned in our lives, to help the younger generations.

Perhaps you know of children or youth who need mentors. There is value to having some experienced men or women around they can connect with who often know what to expect around the corner of their lives. Maybe it’s just to be an intentional friend.

For some of you it just means making sure you are working on helping your own children, for others who are inspired and can handle the extra commitment, it means more. How much more is up to you.

My father was a good example. He served in World War II as a combat paratrooper. Although he was seriously wounded, he recovered after a year of rehabilitation, went to college, got married and started a family. During his life he was self-employed, active with his Army veterans organizations and also responsible in leading community organizations to help promote cultural, family and athletic events. He was  generally a very busy man but I think he really enjoyed the opportunity to live his life and give back to the country which helped him get his start.

Service to the country never ends and helping young people will help shape a better tomorrow.

About Fatherhood in a Technological World

Fathers of young children in today’s modern society are facing unprecedented challenges with the wave of technology allowing ever easier access to the internet. The effect on your children has and will have a great influence on their growth. As a parent, you may be feeling the anxiety of having to confront the challenges of being at the end of the rail of the powerful forces driving technology into the laps and hands of your children.

Your work is cut out for you are a father. Even though popular culture doesn’t do well to herald the value of the leadership role of men in the form of fathers, let me tell you right now, being a father in this time and age has never been more important.
