FTW.17 : Staying abreast of homework

Fatherhood in a Technological World – Message #17

Life as a parent can get pretty busy, and if your child’s use of technology is dependent on their completing homework assignments, including turning their assignments, then you need to make sure you keep tabs on their school work progress.

In our son’s 5th grade class, most of his homework was done in class. This was a change of pace from previous years and parents may have a tendency to back off checking their child’s work. There is not necessarily a correlation between not having to do their work and home and getting the most out of their work. I suggest giving your child an expectation to at least mildly explain to you their work, even if it is just a brief proof of comprehension. The practice of communicating what they are learning will pay dividends in the future.

As middle schoolers are supposed to be more responsible for doing their work without the handholding of elementary school, it may be easy to blow off monitoring their progress. The first trimester of middle school can be pretty hectic for a student, so they may take several weeks to get into the rhythm or their school work and system of organizing their work.

Easy access to technology and extra time at home created by the void of the homework done at school becomes a time management challenge. During this time, the familiarity of playing with technology may be a very strong distraction so you’ll need to stay on your toes.

My son’s school provides a weekly assignment summary sheet, so it helps using that as a focal point to check progress. Stay alert for long term projects that require more planning and time management. Keep your child’s teachers’ email addresses handy.

The basic gist of this video’s message is, even though you may be busy with work or whatever else is going on in your busy life as a husband and parent. you need to make time to stay abreast of your child’s work in school and to make sure playtime technology does not interfere.
