FTW.4: The Guinea Pig Argument

Fatherhood in a Technological World – Episode #4

Sometimes you get into these insane arguments with your children about using technology. As those little minds get older and more mature, they start using some pretty devious little statements in an attempt to not give up their use of technology.

That’s when I, on occasion, use the all encompassing, argument that works like reverse psychology. No one wants to believe they are being played upon or taken advantage of by anyone, so that is why the “Guinea Pig” argument can be effective in derailing your child’s resistance to giving themselves a break from the “idiot boxes” of today.

The ever present reason to refrain from looking at a monitor for hours on end is to preserve your health. Forcing your body to remain in the same positions for hours, whether intentionally or not, will have an ill effect on your health.

Like Jim Rohn use to teach: you can eat a candy bar every day and maybe the first week you will not suffer ill health, but that doesn’t mean you can say, “I’ve eaten a candy bar every day for a week, therefore, It must be healthy to eat a candy bar every day.”  You as a parent , as a dad, have got to be smarter than that, but that is often precisely the kind of argument you can expect from your child.

Your work is cut out for you are a father. Even though popular culture doesn’t do well to herald the value of the leadership role of men in the form of fathers, let me tell you right now, being a father in this time and age has never been more important.
