You Mustn’t Quit

The beginning of the year brings many words of encouragement to persevere. To follow through with the plans you have will need determination and perseverance.

If you have a good idea run with it.

If you don’t have any idea, keep searching for it.

You’ve been given life. Les Brown put it straight: you beat out 15 million other sperm cells to be who you are, don’t think your life was created by mere chance.

We were walking back to our car after a visit to the Legion of Honor in San Francisco yesterday when I was inspired by the sunset beyond the trees. I was inspired to look beyond the darkness to the beauty of the colorful sunset across the Pacific Ocean, that magnificent sunset saying good bye to another day, before which many a celebratory drink in the past had been hoisted between comrades and friends in solemn salute to a glorious vision of the future.

May you look beyond your darkness to see your guiding light.

Do not quit

In order not to quit, you will keep an eye out for inspiration,

Keep and ear for an encouraging word, to march another league.

Don’t mind your pain but the struggle of others as you help them find their stride,

The colors, the guidon, the flag raised up high, give us a moment to forget our fatigue.

You Mustn’t Quit

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest! if you must—but never quit.

Life is queer, with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about
When he might have won if he’d stuck it out;
Stick to your task, though the pace seems slow—
You may succeed with one more blow.

Success is failure turned inside out—
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt—
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems afar;
So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit_
It’s when things seem worst that YOU MUSN’T QUIT.

– from “The Book Of Virtues” (1993), by William J. Bennett
