Threat Alert: The “can’t do it” attitude

When my children do homework and then complain and whine  “I can’t do it, it’s too hard.” I have a standard answer:

“Ask a question.”

That way I try to get them to start thinking of how to solve a problem rather than throwing their arms up in the air with the white flag.

What’s even more of a problem is if you have a habit of telling your children “You can’t do it” rather than encouraging them with “do your best.”

Think about it. Is it a matter of skill or safety? If it’s a safety issue, of course, “Stop! That will burn your hand.” or “Stop! That will smash your finger.”

If it is a skill issue, make some time and see how you can encourage them in a way that matches their level of understanding.

You know what happens if you don’t train your children to solve problems and saturate them with “you can’t do it”? They just might grow up to adults thinking they are justified in telling other people “You can’t do it.”

“I’ve got a great idea for a new business!”
“You can’t do that.”

“I can make myself better than that!”
“You can’t do better than that.”

“I am going to get out of this mess!”
“You can’t, you’re stuck here like the rest of us.”

“I can be somebody”
“You can’t be somebody” (because I am “nobody”).

After that blitzkrieg of negativity, don’t you feel like washing yourself off with an anti-loser wash on turbo mode?

**
Virtually every person I’m aware of who has succeeded in achieving a real step up in status does something on a daily basis to help inoculate their minds from a negative world, some kind of mental exercise or reading to remind them that in this world great things are always possible and that they can play a part in them.

Sometimes you have got to shore up your defenses when you run into some really negative people.

Don’t let the seeds of their negativity take you out of the game.

If you stay down too long you may miss that opportunity to lift someone up who needs you, that includes you.

Get your game on, I believe in you. You can do it.
